Shirley Janetta Lawless Elder, 78, passed away at her home Saturday, December 9, 2017, after an extended illness. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Shirley was the daughter of the late Alva and Florence Doty Lawless. The youngest of a family of six, Shirley is also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and her late husband, John Henry Elder (d. 2003) and daughter, Susan Elder. She had been a peninsula resident for 51 years. Shirley was a parishioner at Church of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Smithfield.
A devoted military wife and beloved mother, Shirley leaves to cherish her memory her children, Tammy Dogan, Laurie Rodgers, Deanna “Dena” Owens, John Elder,III, Joseph Elder, David Elder, and Stephen Elder; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of friends and extended family.
A Christian Wake and Prayer Service will be held 6:00 pm, Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Colonial Funeral Home, Carrollton, followed by visitation. A funeral mass will be held 10 am, Wednesday, December 13, in Church of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 300 Smithfield Blvd., Smithfield, VA. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
